UNITED STATES—Mexico’s President, Enrique Pena Nieto offered the caravan of migrants traveling to the United States borders asylum.

Nieto addressed a crowd stating, “Today, Mexico extends you its hand. This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws, and its first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico.”

The plan includes temporary ID cards, work permits, schooling for migrant children, medical care, and housing. Only 1,700 of the 7,000 migrants fleeing Mexico for asylum accepted the Nieto’s offer.

US Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, was quoted on Fox News stating that “The caravan is not getting in. There’s a legal way to enter this country. Those who choose to enter illegally will be stopped. We are working with our partners in Mexico. They have taken unprecedented efforts within their territory to ensure an orderly flow and that those who have no legal right to be there are removed. We intend to do the same.”

Nielsen spoke directly to the caravan, “My general message to this caravan is: Do not come. You will not be allowed in. There’s a right way to immigrate to the United States, and this is not it.” Members of the Mexican federal government was helping those in the caravan, passing out water and giving people rides.

President Trump stated: “I am bringing out the military for this National Emergency. [Migrants] will be stopped.”
