MALIBU—A 2.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Malibu region on Sunday, May 17 at around about 8:27 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was about 4 miles east of Malibu. The depth of the quake was registered at 7.4 miles and can be qualified as a “shallow” focal depth (anywhere between 0 to 43 miles underneath the Earth’s surface).

The preliminary earthquake report on the incident labeled it a microearthquake due to its low intensity and impact. Quakes such as these rarely cause damage and often go unfelt by people.

No reports of injury or damage were reported.
