BEVERLY HILLS—Vice President Mike Pence was back in Los Angeles last week for another round of GOP fundraising and a border wall inspection. Pence attended a fundraising brunch in Malibu, where ticket prices ranged from $10,000 to $100,000. He also sat for a roundtable discussion in Beverly Hills at 5 p.m. on April 30.

Pence visited Calexico to promote President Trump’s proposed border wall fortification and construction. The VP mentioned that a better border wall would deter illegal aliens from crossing into the US, his comments at the border hinged on symbolism than concrete plans.

“We’ve got to build a wall,” said Pence. “A wall sends a clear message that we are a nation of borders.”

Despite a slight uptick recently, which notably includes the “caravan” of asylum seekers near Tijuana, border crossings in the United States have been on the decline for years. The VP acknowledged the trend.

“I’m pleased to report that illegal crossings at our southern border have fallen by more than 40 percent in the past 12 months,” Pence said before thanking Border Patrol agents in Calexico.

“But let’s be clear,” Pence added, “as we think about the hardship of those families gathered at our border in the so-called caravan, this wall is not only necessary to support you men and women who are on the front lines of our homeland security, but it’s also a physical manifestation of the determination of the American people to protect our borders and protect our sovereignty. And we will complete it.”
