HOLLYWOOD—For the first time in 2014 a movie has grossed beyond the $100 million mark at the box-office. Yes, the last time this feat was performed was in June 2014, when “Transformers: Age of Extinction” gross just over $100 million during its three-day weekend. Well, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I” brought in just over $123 million this weekend.
While the movie debuted to more than $50 million on its opening day, the third installment in the franchise falls short of the $158 million debut of the first installment, not to mention the $150 million debut of its sequel “Catching Fire.” Grabbing the #2 spot in theaters was the animated flick “Big Hero 6” with around $20 million, while “Interstellar” is still holding strong with about $15 million.
Falling to the #4 spot was last week’s box-office champ “Dumb and Dumber To” with about $14 million. And rounding out the top five is the thriller “Gone Girl” which continues to hang on with just under $3 million in box-office receipts. I’ll argue this now, the box-office success of the flick is certain to make it a strong awards contender for 2015.
While there are no major flicks arriving in theaters this coming weekend, families will get plenty of time to enjoy the animated comedy “Penguins” which hits theaters on Wednesday.
