WESTWOOD—John and Amelia Garrick, of Newport Beach, have made a multi-million dollar donation to the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science to launch the B. John Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences.

The donation of $9 million was given for studying methods of saving lives, property, and the environment in the wake of natural, man-made, and industrial disaster situations.

Garrick, who earned his PhD from UCLA in 1968, was recently named the university’s Engineering Alumnus of the Year.

The institute will be located on the UCLA campus in Engineering IV, a new facility in development that will open in 2015. Garrick will be leading the school’s advisory board.
