CALIFORNIA — A Federal Law Enforcement Officer shot on Friday, May 22, was identified earlier today by family as Dave Patrick Underwood.

According to the FBI’s statement on Sunday, May 31, the cause of death was the fatal gunshot wounds sustained by Underwood as an unidentified vehicle shot at him and then fled the scene.

A second officer sustained critical injuries in a drive-by shooting outside the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building. The FBI has not released an update about the officer’s condition.

No arrests have been made and a motive for the shootings has not been determined either. The FBI and the Oakland police are both involved in the investigation.

The two officers were from the Federal Protection Service under the Department of Homeland Security and were keeping an eye on the protest for the killing of George Floyd, happening nearby.

Lancaster City Councilwoman Angela Underwood Jacobs, sister to the deceased, posted a statement on her Facebook regarding her brother’s death

“My brother, Dave Patrick Underwood, a federal officer, was murdered 5/9/20 in Oakland, California, while on duty during the riots. This Violence Must Stop”

Underwood was a Pinole high school graduate, a working-class suburb north of Oakland. He was an upstanding member of the community, participating in Soulful Softball Sunday, a community project that combined softball and charity.

The protest had been peaceful when it started early on Friday but gradually became charged and chaotic. City officials claimed 70 local businesses were vandalized, while 13 police officers were injured.

The Federal building’s glass doors were shattered and there was anti-police graffiti sprayed on the walls.
