MALIBU—The Pacific Coast Highway will be intermittently closed west of Malibu in both directions from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28.

The closure will run from just south of Las Posas Road to the La Jolla Canyon Trail in Point Mugu State Park. The California Department of Transportation and Caltrans, reports that drivers “should expect delays up to 30 minutes,” and recommends that drivers “plan ahead and use alternate routes” to avoid traffic congestion. There will be signs posted in advance of the closure to inform drivers of these delays.

During the closure, workers from San Luis Obispo company Access Limited Construction will be installing cable netting to prevent rock slides from damaging the highway. This precaution is necessary in the wake of the 2013 Springs Fire, which denuded the slopes of vegetation. Without vegetation, the natural erosion of the area was accelerated, making it prone to rock and land slides.

A helicopter will assist ALC rock climbers in the installation process because of the location’s steep slopes.
