MALIBU—On December 29, Caltrans District 7 reported that a nine-mile section of the Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) has been closed due to a potential rockslide hazard to the public.

Crews have closed the PCH in both directions between Yerba Buena Road north of Malibu and Las Posas Road in Oxnard on December 28, at 5 p.m.  It is believed that an area near Point Mugu Rock may be vulnerable to rockslides due to heavy rains.

The closure began on December 18, when rain caused rocks to fall onto the thoroughfare.  It is recommended that motorists plan their traveling ahead and seek other routes aside from the highway until the area is deemed safe to use again.

Workers are continuing to remove loose debris from the hillside.  Repairs and the reopening of the highway could be slowed by future rains.  The National Weather Service predicts a chance of rain from January 1 to January 3, 2011.

Caltrans additionally reminds travelers to “slow for the cone zone.”
