SANTA MONICA—On February 12, at approximately 3 a.m., a race involving two vehicles along the 2000 block of Wilshire Boulevard ended tragically.

According to officials, the driver of one of the participating vehicles was a resident of Santa Monica. The individual, who is being identified only as a 23-year-old male, was racing another individual westbound on Wilshire Boulevard.

After a preliminary investigation, police have determined the driver crashed into a tree on the north side of the road after he lost control of his vehicle and struck the automobile he was racing. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

When police found the other vehicle involved, it was abandoned. The investigation is currently ongoing.
