BEVERLY HILLS—Richard Simmons has closed his exercise studios Slimmons after 40 years on Nov. 19.

Simmons made the announcement of his Beverly Hills studio’s closure on Oct. 21. About 60 people, some from other states, attended the last hour-long workout. The health guru himself did not make an appearance but he did leave a letter for those in attendance. He later posted the message on his Facebook page.

“When I opened Slimmons in 1974, I simply couldn’t wait to tell everyone that food could be healthy AND delicious or that exercise could be fun,” Simmons wrote on his Facebook post. “Please know that I am in good health and I am happy. No one has ever been able to tell me what to do and the same is true today. I am still independent, determined and opinionated. I simply am making a new beginning for myself — quietly and in my very own special way.”

Simmons said he is now going to take time for himself and he thanked everyone who has supported him on his journey. His studio released 65 workout videos and books that have helped people live a healthier lifestyle.

“Truly, you don’t need me to tell you what to do anymore,” he wrote. “You know. It’s within you. It’s in your heart and it’s been there all along. So get up and get moving!”
