SANTA MONICA—The Annenberg Beach house will be holding their 3rd Annual Yacht Regatta on Saturday, August 23.

According to the event’s website, the yacht regatta charges $15 for the entry of teams of two people. According to last years form, the regatta holds three different divisions: youth/youth, adult/youth, and adult/adult. Participants in the event have to be at least eight years-old.

Participants in the regatta are expected to build their own yachts for the races using only duct tape and cardboard. Pool-themed items can be used for decoration. Water-based paints are allowed, but the use of wax, sealers, epoxy, wood, plastic, foam, and shrink wrap are prohibited.

“The yacht must be built in such a way that the crew can easily exit if necessary. While the yacht is in the water, both crew members must be visible…Yachts must be powered by paddles/oars only! If the crew loses their paddle(s) once the race has started crew members can use their arms to get them as far as possible,” according to the 2013 registration form.

Crew members have to bring their own paddle, which can be made from any material. The 2013 registration form indicates participants should decorate a small box, or recycle an old coffee canister to collect votes for the people’s Choice Awards for attendees to select their Favorite Yacht, vote on which yacht was Most Likely to Sink, which yacht had the Best Use of a Theme, and the Most Spirited.

The form elaborates that “both Crew members must be visible at all times, and must be completely in the yacht at the finish line in order to be judged as a yacht that has completed the full distance of the race.” The race ends when the yacht has reached the other side of the pool.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. and will be located at the Annenberg Community Beach House on 415 Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica, CA.

The Annenberg Community Beach House typically functions as a public pool, but the pool will be closed on the day of the regatta in order to conduct the races.
