HOLLYWOOD—It looks like we won’t have to wait long for the next super hero to arrive, as Scarlet Johansson and Morgan Freeman grace computer and television screens in the official trailer for Luc Besson’s “Lucy.” The storyline offers a refreshing take on female lead without a romantic interest.

The film casts Scarlet Johansson as the title character, Lucy, a woman who gets caught up in a terrible sequence of events and becomes a living container for a special kind of drug. After a run-in with some thugs, the drugs inside of Lucy invade her system and awaken super human abilities. To explain her new abilities, Lucy seeks out a man named Professor Norman, played by Morgan Freeman, who helps explain what is happening to her brain. Johansson told Interview Magazine in October 2013 that “[she plays] a character who, throughout the course of the film, begins to use a greater and greater capacity of her brain.”

The film is written and directed by Luc Besson, who the New York Times said in their biography section is seen as the French equivalent of Steven Spielberg. Johansson informed Interview Magazine that Besson had been fine tuning the story line for 10 years. The film was shot in Paris, Taipei, and New York.

Besson’s previously directed films such as: “Taken” and “Taken 2,” starring Liam Neeson; the “Transporter” series starring Jason Statham; and “The Fifth Element” starring Bruce Willis, Mila Jovovich and Gary Oldman.

“Lucy” is set to hit theaters on Friday, August 8.
