SANTA MONICA—On Saturday, May 23 the Santa Monica Police Department will set up a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint at an undisclosed location, that will be within city limits.

According to a press release from the SMPD, the checkpoint will occur between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. DUI check points can help reduce drunk-driving accidents up to 20 percent, while also conserving funds for the department.

The department is able to save $6 for every $1 they spend on the checkpoints. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints are approved by nearly 90 percent of California residents and are the most effective DUI strategy. The police would like to remind all drivers to report suspected drunk drivers.
