HOLLYWOOD—It was apparent that romance was on everyone’s mind this weekend, as the teen tearjerker “The Fault of Our Stars” surprised audiences with a stellar $48.2 million opening. The movie starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort opened to a little over $8 million during Thursday night screenings, and had a massive debut on Friday with more than $26 million.

Falling to the #2 spot was last week’s victor “Maleficent” which earned around $33.5 million. The Angelina Jolie flick has already crossed the $100 million mark in just two weeks.  Earning the #3 spot was the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow” which took in $29.1 million. The picture which received excellent reviews didn’t connect with audiences as well, but I have a feeling word of mouth buzz will draw moviegoers to check out the film.

Landing in the #4 spot is “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with another $14.7 million to its tally. After three weeks in theaters, the film is only about $10 million shy of the $200 million mark at the domestic box-office. Rounding out the box-office is the Seth MacFarlane comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” which added another $7.2 million to its total. Unlike “Ted,” MacFarlane’s latest comedy has not delivered the laughs that audiences expected.

This weekend sees another duel between sequels; the animated flick “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and the comedy “22 Jump Street.” Any guesses who might reign supreme?
