WESTWOOD — Award nominated director Steve McQueen will be at the UCLA Anderson School of Management for a live interview on February 28.
The director of “12 Years a Slave” will be at the James Bridges Theater of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television to start the brand new speaker series, “Entertainment That Matters.”
“The critical and commercial success of McQueen’s Oscar-nominated movie, ’12 Years a Slave,’ clearly demonstrates the power of storytelling to educate a new generation about an important period in America that is currently omitted from most school curriculum,” said UCLA Anderson professor Sanjay Sood in a press release.
The series will star personalities from film and television who will discuss “the power of media, storytelling and celebrity” to educate and influence the public at large. On McQueen’s part, he has championed the notion of having the book “12 Years a Slave,” as required reading in the curriculum of public schools across the country. The Nation School Boards Association recently approved an initiative that would allow the book, film and a study guide based on both to be available to schools nationwide.
The event, which will be conducted by professor of sociology Darnell Hunt, will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Since seating is limited, RSVP is required, which can be done at the Anderson School’s official website.
