HOLLYWOOD—It was an epic weekend at the box-office, as Clint Eastwood’s take on revered pilot Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger soared to the top spot this weekend. “Sully” directed by Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks earned $35.5 million during its debut weekend. That is quite impressive for a drama in the first weekend after Labor Day which tends to be quite slow. The film is already generating plenty of Oscar buzz for both Eastwood and Hanks.
Landing in second place was the thriller “When the Bough Breaks” starring Morris Chestnut and Regina King earning $15 million. I expected the thriller to have bigger numbers considering the massive marketing campaign that was pushed for the movie. The horror flick “Don’t Breathe” took third place adding $8.2 million to its tally. Not bad for a flick that has already earned over $66 million.
Nabbing fourth place was “Suicide Squad” which has officially crossed the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office. Guess it proves yet again that critics don’t know everything. Rounding out the top five was the animated animal film “The Wild Life” with $3.4 million. The weekend’s other new release “The Disappointments Room” sure disappointed with a trepid $1.4 million. Could that be the biggest bomb of the year? It’s quite possible.
This weekend sees the release of the latest installment in the 1999 cult classic “The Blair Witch Project,” amply titled “Blair Witch.” Hmm, not certain if that’s a flick I want to see, considering the 1999 classic was pure hype with very little to any thrills.
