HOLLYWOOD—He’s the host with the most, back in 2011 comedian Ricky Gervais delivered a fun-filled, sharp-tongued ceremony at the Golden Globes Awards show.  Celebrities in the audience weren’t doing much laughing, but viewers at home watched one of the most entertaining shows in years, hence the decision to bring him back to do it all over again.  He took shots at Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Jodie Foster and Johnny Depp.

The 69th Golden Globe Awards brought out the beautiful as Hollywoodcelebrated achievements in television and movies and coming out on top was “The Artist” with three awards including Best Picture Comedy or Musical.  Following behind was “The Descendants” with two wins including Best Picture in a Motion Picture Drama.  George Clooney continued his reign as the one to beat as he walked away with the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his riveting performance in “The Descendants.”  While accepting the award he joked with fellow nominees Michael Fassbender and good friend Brad Pitt.

It has been years since there has been such an eclectic category of women nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, but icon Meryl Streep walked away with the award for her powerhouse performance as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.”  Streep was shocked as she headed to the stage to accept her ninth Golden Globe.  She praised all of her fellow nominees and gave kudos to good friend Viola Davis.  Looks like the Oscars will come down to a three-way race between Streep, Davis and Michelle Williams with each lady already have won one major award this season.

In a sharply contested category of the evening, Best Supporting Actress was awarded to a thrilling Octavia Spencer for her work in “The Help.”  She was speechless as she accepted her award, but poignantly pointed out the effect Martin Luther King Jr. has had on the society.  The iconic Sidney Poiter received a standing ovation as he presented Morgan Freeman with the Cecile B. Demille award.  For Best Director, Martin Scorsese won for “Hugo” defeating early favorite Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist.” Jean Dujardin was victorious for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for “The Artist.”

Claire Danes won for Best Actress-TV Drama for “Homeland.”  Matt LeBlanc won for Best Actor in a TV Series Comedy or Musical for his work in “Episodes.” Best TV Series Comedy or Musical was awarded to fan favorite “Modern Family,” which had a lively acceptance speech thanks to cast member Sophia Vergara who accepted the award in Spanish.

Laura Dern beat out Amy Poehler and Zooey Deschanel for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her hilarious role in the HBO series “Enlightened.”  Showtime’s “Homeland” won for Best TV Series-Drama beating out “American Horror Story” and “Boardwalk Empire.”  Kelsey Grammer was taken back a bit for his surprise win for Best Actor in a TV Series Drama for “Boss.”  Many were expecting Steve Buscemi to be a repeat winner for his excellent work on “Boardwalk Empire.”

With the Globes now over, the next big award ceremony is the Screen Actors Guild Awards to be held on Sunday, January 29.  Gervais proved once again that he knows how to host a show, my bet is that third time hosting isn’t such a bad idea for the Golden Globes.  Until next year!
