HOLLYWOOD—Well, I can’t remember the last time I recall a movie drawing in such impressive numbers at the box-office. Perhaps, “The Sixth Sense” and “Avatar” which continued to mesmerize moviegoers week after week, but you can now add “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to that list. The sequel earned an impressive $153.5 million during its second week in theaters. Yep, go figure. After less than 2 weeks, the movie has crossed over $500 million at the domestic box-office.

Yep, that record of “Avatar” being the highest grossing film of all-time in the United States looks like that will be shattered. I mean “Star Wars” is a flick that earned more than $27 million on Christmas Eve, and then earned over $50 million on Christmas Day. With a bevy of new releases in theaters, some flicks rose to the top, some not so much. The comedy “Daddy’s Home” starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell impressed moviegoers with $38.8 million to land in second place. The duo’s last outing “The Other Guys” also proved to be a hit with comedy lovers.

Nabbing third place was the dramedy “Joy” starring Jennifer Lawrence. The flick which is already generating Oscar buzz for Lawrence earned $17.5 million. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are proving that America does indeed love them as “Sisters” managed to land in fourth place with $13.9 million. Rounding out the top five was the sequel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” with $12.7 million. Other new releases for the weekend included Will Smith’s “Concussion” which earned only $11 million. “The Big Short” debuted to $10.5 million, while “Point Break” didn’t impress with a dismal $10.5 million.

Could “Star Wars” reign supreme for a third consecutive week? It’s possible, but the flick will have to do battle with Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” which I promise is a thrill-a-minute.
