UNITED STATES—For many adults, we all wish we could rewind time and go back to our childhood. There is a reason for that. It was a time where we didn’t have to worry about responsibilities. When you become an adult you are expected to take on responsibilities and do things that perhaps you didn’t have to do when you were a kid. I’m really writing this column to attempt to understand the psyche of those people who don’t believe work is important or paying bills.

For the life of me, I have always been someone who wanted my own money. When you have your own you are able to dictate how things are spent. No one can tell you to do this or do that. You control your fate when you’re a responsible adult paying your own bills. Is there anyone out there who likes paying bills? Of course not, but at the same time, its life; if you want something you have to pay for it, there really isn’t a way to get around it.

Well to be honest there is, but it’ll put you in massive debt. In doing so you ruin your credit and the only way out is to pay off that debt somehow or file bankruptcy. No one wants to do that, but some people do have that thought process. Just let the bills continue to rise and rise until either I lose the service that I took for advantage or if I have a job my check starts to be garnished.

What if I told you someone said you could have a house, but all you had to do is pay the back taxes or the taxes on the property. Now listen closely to what I’m saying, you’re not paying for the house, you’re just paying the taxes owed on the property. That sounds like a grand deal right? Yeah it is and before some of you start thinking what is wrong with the house, no, there is nothing wrong. Wouldn’t you jump on this opportunity? I would, so imagine my frustration when learning my youngest brother was given this opportunity by my oldest brother who recently purchased a new house. The deal was clear as day and night, and my younger brother didn’t seem to live up to what he claimed he would deliver.

Now some of you might be saying, well perhaps he ran out of money? That’s not the case, and I’m going to tell you why? When you get a refund check where you have over $6-$7k there is no excuse. Especially when the taxes are around $3000! You pay off the taxes and then utilize whatever is left to furnish the house. You don’t go spend lavishly on items for the house without considering the needs over the wants. Why is it we think this way? Why is it that we put wants over our needs time and time again? Is it a generational thing? I’m starting to think it is and this is not to harp on millennials. I mean I’m a millennial so I’m not trying to beat up my own people, but I just don’t understand it America.

I know so many millennials who seem to have this entitlement factor. Like they should get whatever they want because they want it and you shouldn’t say anything about it. I mean we’ve all heard about the 30 year-old guy whose parents took him to court to get him evicted from their home. First, you should want to have your own place. I can understand older children living with their parents if they are taking care of them because of an illness or they need some extra financial help. However, to just be staying in your parent’s house because you refuse to work, you refuse to go to school and you refuse to do anything of substance is absolutely bonkers.

Get off you’re a** and do something already! I don’t understand this logic of not wanting to work yet expecting things to just come your way for grown adults. Life does not operate or work in this fashion and I don’t know honestly what one can do to shift this ideology of thinking. Bills are part of life, you have to pay them and if you’re living in someone else’s home and you have a job, you should not want to do it, it should be required for you to do it because it’s the right thing to do.

Nothing is more annoying than someone who runs water and electricity incessantly, unaware that its costs money to have those utilities. Perhaps you deliver that high water and electric bill to that grown child who refuses to take responsibility and force them to actually acknowledge their BS. They might be upset with you, but oh well. Get it in gear or get the hell out. I feel like parents nowadays are way too soft. They don’t parent; they’re too busy trying to live out their childhood. Here’s a piece of advice: don’t have kids if you’re not ready to be parents! It’s not fair to the child to suffer because of your recklessness and irresponsibility.

Your job as a parent is to prepare your child to be ready to tackle the world. To be able to care for themselves, take care of their responsibilities and when they have kids teach their children the same skills they were taught. Yes, Toys R’ Us has that slogan “I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys R’ Us kid,” but it’s inevitable. In life, we all age rather we like it or not!
