SANTA MONICA—Tongva Park’s Family Saturdays will be running throughout the summer. For the month of June, the park will be featuring a performance on ancient music of the Americas. In July, there will be a Japanese taiko drumming performance. Ending the summer in August will be the “Family Dance Jam,” which according to a press release from the city of Santa Monica, “an inter-generational movement workshop designed for all ages.”

On Saturday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. families can watch and participate in Music of the Ancient Americas with Martin Espino. Families can watch Espino perform and interact with him and his instruments.

The Taiko Center of L.A. will host a demonstration and workshop on taiko drumming on Saturday, July 23. Participants will hear traditional taiko music and learning about the history and the cultural significance. The audience will have the chance to get to play the drums alongside the performers.

Tongva Park will have the “Family Dance Jam” on Saturday, August 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Families will join DJ duo Sadubas and the “Family Dance Jam” team of dancers and have their own personal dance party. The event will feature two 45 minute sets which allow the dance team to help create a fun and creative environment.

All the events are free and open to the public. Tongva Park is located at 1615 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, CA 90401. The park is located in Santa Monica’s Civic Center. The park is accessible by bike, train, bus and car. Attendees can take the Metro’s new Expo Line all the way to the last stop at 4th St. & Colorado Avenue in downtown Santa Monica.

Bike riders can park their bikes near the park entrances on Ocean Avenue, Main Street, and Olympic Boulevard. The bus line also has several stops nearby the park. There are metered street parking available. The Civic Center will also provide parking. The center is located at 333 Civic Center Drive. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes then a $1 for each additional hour and $5 a day.

Tongva Park’s Family Saturdays are presented by the Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division.
