UNITED STATES—On Tuesday, November 26, it was announced that President Donald Trump is donating his third quarter salary to help the fight against the opioid crisis affecting the nation.

President Trump is donating the $100,000 he would have been paid as POTUS to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, who is in charge of overseeing federal public health offices and programs.

The funds donated will be used to help fight the opioid crisis that has impacted the United States. Statistics show that more than 70,000 Americans died in 2017 from drug overdoses, with the majority as a result of opioid use , according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

First Lady Melania Trump made an appearance in Baltimore on Tuesday, November 26, where she spoke to middle and high school students at a forum to address the dangers of opioid use, The White House indicated in a tweet.

The President of the United States is required to be paid for his position as Commander in Chief. President Trump has pledged to donate his salary to charity and good causes. One of his past salary donations went to the surgeon general’s office.
