MALIBU-A project to improve the safety of two tunnels will commence on June 6.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is set to begin improving the Kanan Dume Road and Malibu Canyon Road Tunnels by repairing existing tunnel liner and installing new liner. The project, according to a statement from the city, aims to improve vehicle safety and driver visibility.

The first phase of the construction will begin on June 6 with the Kanan Dume Road Tunnel and will last around eight months. The southbound tunnel will be closed Mondays through Fridays from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and traffic will diverted to the northbound tunnel during construction, with one lane provided for each direction. Following the completion of the first phase on November 13, the northbound tunnel will close the following day with the same protocols in place as the southbound project. The department noted that residents will continue to have access to their properties during construction.

The Malibu Canyon Road tunnel will close for its turn at improvements around January 2, 2015. In all cases, the Public Works Department advised residents that they should plan ahead for traffic delays and make the appropriate preparations.

Both projects are being completed due to a cooperative effort on behalf of the Public Works Department and the cities of Malibu, Calabasas and Agoura Hills. Funding for the project has come from County funds and State 1B Transportation Bond funds. Kerjon Lee of the Public Works Department told Canyon News that the total cost of the effort was around $5 million. Three million dollars were spent on the Malibu Canyon Road project, while the remaining $2 million went towards the Kanan Dume Road project.
