HOLLYWOOD—Vox Femina Los Angeles is a women’s choral ensemble dedicated to the performance of quality choral literature with an emphasis on music by women composers. Choral singing is one of the oldest performance arts in existence, but Vox is excited to perform new works and accept new challenges for themselves and for the audience. Dr. Iris S. Levine founded Vox in 1997. In the past 13 years, Vox has established itself as one of the preeminent women’s choruses in the United States, with a demonstrated ability to perform a highly eclectic repertoire, which can be heard on the ensemble’s recordings. Vox Femina Los Angeles has actively fulfilled its goals through an exciting schedule of performances, touring and educational outreach. The organization is funded through grants and private donations.

The 2010-11 season is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the LA County Arts Commission.

WHAT/WHO: Vox Femina Los Angeles launches its 2010-11 season with VOX JUDAICA. For centuries, women have carried the Jewish traditions forward in the home and around the world. The audience will experience the wide span of Judaic music and the influence that women have played in Judaism over the years. Vox gives voice to these remarkable women, both past and present, who have honored their faith and pushed its boundaries. Selections will be performed in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino and English, representing the span of Jewish music. Styles will include sacred music, as well as both Sephardic and Ashkenazic folk music and a special set of pieces set to Anne Frank’s words in her diary by Minnesota composer Linda Tutas Haugen. Vox will be accompanied by both piano as well as string quartet for many of the pieces.
