HOLLYWOOD—Academy Award® winning actor Denzel Washington and Chris Pine are an incredible duo on the big screen. In this film, Washington brings out a performance that is reminiscent of his earlier work, when the actor seemed to have fire in his belly for his roles. Chris Pine has grown a lot since “Star Trek” and is now a real and powerful leading man. The two men work great opposite each other, but the film is gut-wrenching and harrowing.

Pine and Washington portray blue-collar railroad workers who team up to prevent an unmanned, runaway train packed with diesel fuel and toxic chemicals from derailing and causing more than $100 million in deaths, damages and cleanup costs. They place their own fears and worries aside, while deciding for different reasons why they will perform such a heroic act and a selfless act. Washington’s character plays a father who places his love for his daughters in harm’s way in order to keep other people’s children safe, and Pine’s character seems to just decide to do the right thing, after being hesitant as most people would be initially.

Director Tony Scott and writer Mark Bomback create a challenging story that tugs at our inner desire to see a tragedy unfold before our eyes. It’s a very human instinct that Bomback elicits from the viewer and Scott’s ability to play out this story and still incorporate other people into it is magnificently done. In addition to Oscar-worthy performances by Pine and Washington, actress Rosario Dawson does an amazing job as Connie.

However, don’t expect to go to the theater and see your favorites if they are not Washington and Pine, because everyone else plays supporting in this film aside from these two men, who are absolutely incredible. Washington is rarely outshined or upstaged, but Chris Pine manages to do both things in several important scenes in the film.

The studio says of the film, “Unstoppable, a 20th Century Fox drama about a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals, pits an engineer and his conductor in a race against time. They’re chasing the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town.”

“Unstoppable” leaves the viewer’s totally engrossed during the entire film, and also leaves you satisfied for the ending. Sure you probably think you know what’s going to happen. However, what transpires at the end was still a surprise for me.

“Unstoppable” should garner Chris Pine an Oscar nomination and the film gets Five and a half of Five Stars from this reviewer.
