WEST HOLLYWOOD—On September 10, the West Hollywood City Council announced its approval of  the proposed “Sunset Time” project, a new hotel development that may take place on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

The city reports that “Sunset Time” may comprise two acres and include a world-class boutique hotel, condominium units, a live entertainment venue and other commercial purposes and may be built at the site of “House of Blues Sunset Strip.”  The hotel may consist of 149 rooms, 40 residential condominium units, five low-income affordable housing units, 35,456 square feet of commercial and live entertainment space and 426 parking spaces.

The “House of Blues Sunset Strip” opened in 1994, and has been famous for showcasing architectural pieces and other visual works by artists such as Alan Sainte James Boudrot. Live events by performers Maceo Parker, Prince and the late Tupac Shakur have also been held there.  Founded by famed businessman Isaac Tigrett, partner Dan Aykroyd and designer James Cafarelli, “The House of Blues” has served in numerous locations as a celebration of the culture of rural southern music. The venue plays host to a variety of genres such as the Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and Roots, and Rock and Roll.

West Hollywood’s “House of Blues” venue carries a lease that will remain valid until 2012, but may be updated for an additional 13 years.  The proposed plan includes a goal to allow the House of Blues to remain at its current address on 8430 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood.

Upcoming events at West Hollywood’s House of Blues include a live performance by Rock Sugar with Franki Doll and the Broken Dolls and Champagne Blvd on September 20.  For more information, visithouseofblues.com.

The city states that its Development Agreement includes a 10-year allotment in which the proposed project can begin its construction and that after its approval of the project, the owner of the location’s property may seek financing and operators for the site. None of the existing buildings will undergo demolition until financing for the construction has been finalized and building permits have been issued. This process is believed to last for at least a year.
