WEST HOLLYWOOD—On November 5, the City of West Hollywood officially began its Transgender Awareness Month, recognizing and embracing the transgender members of the community.
West Hollywood is the only city in the United States that recognizes November as Transgender Awareness Month, choosing the month because November 20 marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance, memorializing transgendered individuals who have been murdered.
The West Hollywood City Council created its first transgender advisory board in 2010, in hopes to make the community safer for the transgender populous.
Several transgender events will take place in the city during the month, including the Transgender Economic Empowerment Project and the Transgender Wellness and Well-being Conference.
