SANTA MONICA—Woodlawn Cemetery, Mortuary, and Mausoleum is requesting the names of fallen Santa Monica veterans for its new commemorative wall. The final design for the wall was approved by the City Council in December 2013. The purpose of the wall is to honor anyone who served in one of America’s military branches and died while in active duty during a war, in combat, or during another foreign conflict. The city’s goal is to install the monument in time for Memorial Day on May 26.

To be included in the wall, the honoree must be someone who was born in or lived in Santa Monica, had a Santa Monica address when they died in service or chose to be interred in Santa Monica. So far, the city has collected the names of over 90 people and is seeking more.

Woodlawn Cemetery and Mausoleum has been serving the Santa Monica community for over 100 years and is one of the few cemeteries in California that is owned by a city. The mausoleum itself has been around for more than 90 years and was designed to capture the architecture of early Spanish California. Woodlawn is also famous for housing the remains of notable actors and politicians.

In order to view the names that have so far been listed, visit http://www.smgov.net/Departments/Cemetery. To submit a name for inclusion in the wall, email the name of the veteran, branch of service, date of death, the sender’s contact information and other relevant material to woodlawn.cemetery@smgov.net.

Woodlawn has also been requesting donations for the project, and has so far raised $12,000, which more than two-thirds of the total estimated cost of constructing the wall. To make a tax-deductible donation, send checks to City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division, Woodlawn Commemorative Wall,P.O. Box 2200, Santa Monica 90407. Checks should be made payable to the ‘Santa Monica Arts Foundation.’ Woodlawn Cemetery and Mausoleum is located at 1847 14th Street and can be reached at 310-458-8717.
