MALIBU—An underground electrical vault allegedly exploded shortly before 12:00 p.m. on October 22. The blast caused power outages throughout the city affecting close to 2,800 people.

The vault was located at 29208 Heathercliff Road, which is positioned near the Pacific Coast Highway. The spark was caused by workers who had been working on site all morning handling a repair.

According to a Malibu City alert, “The No. 2 northbound lane of PCH at Heathercliff is closed to provide safety for Southern California Edison crews who are working on transformer repairs in the area. There is no estimate for when the lane will be re-opened, but motorists can expect some delays through the night.”

There were no reports of any injuries.
