HOLLYWOOD—I must say I’m quite stunned with the numbers this Memorial Day weekend at the box-office. I’m used to seeing major blockbusters debut to the tune of at least $100 million or more, but not this weekend. With two new flicks arriving, “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” it should have been a fight to the finish. Nope.

The third installment in the latest trilogy for the “X-Men” franchise, “Apocalypse” ruled the weekend with a slightly disappointing $65 million debut over the three-day weekend, if you factor in Memorial Day receipts the movie earned around $80 million. That is a major drop compared to its predecessor “X-Men: Days of Future Past” which earned around $110 million during the same time frame in 2014.

Debuting in second place was “Alice Through the Looking Glass” with a dismal $28.1 million. That is a terrible debut for a film whose predecessor in 2010 stunned movie lovers with an impressive debut to over $100 million. There is plenty of talk that those recent allegations involving the film’s star Johnny Depp against his wife Amber Heard could have impacted the movie’s chances quite heavily.

“The Angry Birds Movie” landed in third place with around $21 million over the weekend bringing its domestic box-office total over $70 million. Nabbing fourth place was “Captain America: Civil War” with just over $19 million for the four-day weekend. Looks like “Civil War” will be the first flick to cross the $400 million mark in 2016 at the domestic box-office.

Rounding out the top five was the comedy “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” with about $11 million. Looks like this sequel won’t be as big as its predecessor. This weekend sees the release of another sequel “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.” It was a box-office hit in 2014, so I expect its sequel to draw big numbers this weekend.
