LOS ANGELES—The Lakers are in the middle of retooling the roster but feel Dallas players PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford would not work for them.
Lakers Star Luka Doncic has been to the finals with the two playing a major role on the Mavericks. Since there has been success it would make sense to bring the players to Los Angeles to play alongside Luka.
There is still a hesitancy to obtain both players. PJ Washington and Luka play great together, but his contract tanks his value. Washington is making $88.76 million over the next four years.
For Gafford, making the move to LA doesn’t make much sense now. Lakers traded for Utah Jazz Center Walker Kessler who will start for them. Gafford makes $18 million fully guaranteed for the next two seasons. Lakers don’t have draft picks to play around with which means it doesn’t make sense to use for a backup center.
The Lakers need more athleticism from the forward position which isn’t available right now for them other than Jonathan Kuminga. Potentially they can revisit another trade with the Mavericks in the near future.
