HOLLYWOOD—Well after two weeks of scaring audience’s senseless, Michael Myers and “Halloween” were finally dethroned for the top spot at the box-office. The music-infused biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” chronicling the rise of Queen and its front-man Freddie Mercury won over audiences. “Bohemian Rhapsody” surprised the box-office with an impressive $51 million during its opening weekend. Big surprise, as I expected the movie to tally somewhere between $35 and $40 million during opening weekend.
Nabbing second place was Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” with a dismal $20 million debut. Why is that so bad? The film cost over $100 million to produce. It does not look like the family-adventure will come anywhere close to recouping that budget spent. Debuting in third place was Tyler Perry’s R-rated comedy “Nobody’s Fool” with $13.7 million, not bad, but Perry has seen larger debuts with his comedies in the past, but those flicks have also been PG-13.
“A Star is Born” is proving without a doubt to be the surprise of the fall season. Since its debut nearly a month ago, the flick has managed to stay within the top five at the box-office. This week the flick landed in fourth place adding another $11.1 million to its total, which now sits at over $165 million domestically. Rounding out the top five was last week’s victor “Halloween” with $11 million. The horror flick has since earned over $150 million at the domestic box-office in three weeks.
I would have argued that “Bohemian Rhapsody” would remain on top at the box-office next weekend, but a film about a popular childhood character returns to the big screen in “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” which is certain to be a hit with families. Also opening this week is “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” It should be a fun week at the box-office to say the least.
