BEVERLY HILLS—The Beverly Hills City Council unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday, January 9 during its Study Session showing support of the ongoing demonstrations in Iran. The City Council voted to proclaim their strong support for the people of Iran who are protesting the corruption, lack of economic opportunity and restrictions on freedom.

“I am proud beyond measure that our City Council is supporting the Iranian people’s right to protest the terrible conditions in their country,” said Mayor Lili Bosse. “The unemployment, inflation, corruption, and disregard for freedom and human rights cannot be tolerated anywhere in the world.  We must, as a City, champion the rights of all people to provide for their families, educate their children and worship in their own way – in other words, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Below is the text from the resolution that was passed by the City Council:

“WHEREAS, the people of Iran have a history of forcefully protesting and successfully overturning unpopular despotic and tyrannical national governments; and WHEREAS, over the past few years, high inflation; unemployment; discrimination towards others based on religion, gender, and sexual orientation; and restrictions on personal freedoms have created widespread frustration and anger with poor living conditions and the lack of opportunities in Iran; and

WHEREAS, on December 28, 2017 demonstrations broke out in the City of Mashhad and have spread throughout the country, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries and  hundreds of arrests as protestors clashed with security forces; and WHEREAS, Democratic nations around the world have expressed their support for  the protestors, including the leaders of Sweden, Canada, Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom and  the United States; and WHEREAS, the City of Beverly Hills stands with the voices of liberty in Iran and around the world and supports the right of free speech and the protestors demand for freedom,  human rights, and economic justice;  NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Beverly Hills resolves as follows:

Section 1. The City of Beverly Hills supports the efforts of the protestors in Iran, urges other cities around the nation and the world to join the City in supporting the protests in Iran, and endorses the statement issued by the U.S. Department of the State.
