HOLLYWOOD—I’m so annoyed with the Recording Academy expanding the list of contenders for Album, Record and Song of the Year from five nominees to eight. I honestly think it’s the stupidest thing in the world. It was done to diversify the list of nominees, but that can be done by diversifying the Recording Academy’s membership.

I mean why expand the list of nominees, knowing there will be several contenders without a chance of winning. It’s like the Academy Awards expanding its Best Picture contenders, where from the get go there are 3 front-runners and the rest have not a chance in the world of a win.

Enough of my rant, the contenders for music’s biggest accolade were revealed on Wednesday, December 5, and leading the pack was Kendrick Lamar with eight nominations including “Album of the Year” for the “Black Panther” soundtrack. Drake picked up six nominations including Album of the Year for “Scorpion,” as did Boi-1Da and Brandi Carlile.

Lady Gaga earned several nominations for the song “Shallow” which is nominated for both Record and Song of the Year. There were some surprises of course. Very little love was given to Taylor Swift and her “Reputation” album which only secured one nomination.
