SANTA MONICA—Santa Monica Mayor, Tony Vazquez, will be hosting a “Play Ball Clinic” for youth in Santa Monica on Thursday, July 28 from 1 to 3 p.m., according to a press release from the city of Santa Monica. This comes as part of the United States Conference of Mayor’s support of the “Play Ball Summer” initiative to focus on the fun nature of baseball and softball and encourage kids in the community to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

The free baseball and softball clinic is available for boys and girls ages 7 through 16 and the children are encouraged to bring their own glove. The clinic will be held at the Clover Park Main Field located at 2600 Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica. Local coaches will be teaching the children the fundamentals of the sport and instructing drills. The mayor will be in attendance and children will be able to take pictures with the mayor Brad Albert, Community Recreation Manager, told Canyon News.

“I think this Play Ball Clinic is a wonderful opportunity for Santa Monica youth to come together and be active during the summer,” said Vazquez. “Most of all, I want them to have fun learning the fundamentals and meeting other kids who share their passion of this great sport.”

Other mayors across the nation will be hosting similar events in their own cities. The goal is to strengthen the connection of communities to the National Pastime and give the children a fun opportunity to remain active throughout the summer. Albert told Canyon News there will be a a gift for each child in attendance.

Local leaders will report activities to www.playbill.org via www.usmayors.org, a site that provides information for the community on how to get involved in “Play Ball” activities and how to join community baseball leagues. The website also has coaching tips and video tutorials from Major League Baseball players and coaches available.

Snacks and water will be available for the children attending the clinic. Those interested in attending the “Play Ball Clinic” need to RSVP by July 26 at communityrecreation@smgov.net or call (310) 458-8300.
