CHICAGO, IL—R&B star R. Kelly missed his recent court appointment in order to have emergency surgery to repair his hernia.

The R&B singer was taken out of the federal prison Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) Chicago custody and transported to a hospital where he underwent an emergency surgery in order to repair a hernia. Immediately after his surgery, Kelly was transported back to his jail cell.

The musician was not allowed any visitors during his hospital stay and is said to be on pain medications. Kelly’s medical conditions prior to going to prison include anxiety, numbness in one of his hands, and a hernia.

He is facing charges in federal courts in both Brooklyn and Chicago including state charges out of Cook County, Illinois, for alleged crimes including racketeering, sexual exploitation of children, and transporting women and girls across state lines for sex.
