GRIFFITH PARK—On Saturday, August 15, the Women For Sobriety Center will be holding their third annual 5K walk-a-thon to raise money and awareness for their cause.

Women For Sobriety Center, Inc. is a transitional living home that started in 1991. The non-profit organization is dedicated to helping women who struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction, including homeless women who have mental illnesses, women recently released from institutions, and women with children. To become a resident, one must be clean and sober for at least 30 days.

The center is located in a three story Victorian house in Los Angeles, and hosts weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. It is affectionately known as “Shirley’s House” because it is owned and operated by Shirley Harris, who is an addiction specialist and is a member of the recovery community. In a promotional video for the center, Harris says, “I saw the need to do whatever I had to do to keep these doors open…this house provides a safe environment for women and women who have children to build a new life.”

The 2015 Walk for Sobriety starts at 8 a.m. in the Crystal Springs area of Griffith Park. The organization has a goal of raising $5,000 to help with the daily upkeep of the center. It is a minimum $25 donation to participate. Register for the walk here.
