LOS ANGELES—On Saturday, August 8, the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD) will host a summer yard sale and recycling event.  All proceeds will go to GLAD’s Domestic Violence and Homeless Program.

The yard sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at GLAD’s headquarters, located at 2222 Laverna Avenue in Los Angeles. GLAD will be accepting donations for the event from June 1 to August 6.

Anyone wishing to recycle old electronics items—such as computers, televisions and monitors—may bring them to the event on Saturday any time between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

People wishing to donate larger items—such as furniture or instruments—should contact Rafif Gerrard ahead of time to arrange the drop-off. Gerrard can be reached by email at rgerrard@gladinc.org or by telephone at (323) 892-2312.  Any and all questions regrading the event should be directed to Gerrard as well.

GLAD, a volunteer organization, was founded in 1969 by two graduate students from the National Leadership Training Program in the Area of the Deaf at San Fernando Valley State College (now known as the California State University, Northridge). According to their website, GLAD’s mission is “to ensure equal access of the deaf and hard of hearing community to the same opportunities afforded their hearing counterparts.”

Since its beginnings, GLAD has become an advocacy group that works “to act as a coordinating agency that addresses the broad social service needs of deaf and hard of hearing people through direct service provision, advocacy, research and dissemination of information regarding deafness to parents, professionals and consumers.” They currently serve 10 counties in Southern California: Los Angeles, Kern, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside, San Luis Obispo, San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono Counties.

As part of their services, GLAD will also offer classes in American Sign Language (ASL) this fall. Students may attend classes to learn ASL in levels I and II. Students must pay $60 to attend a 10-week course.

The deadline to register is September 11. To register for classes or to obtain additional information contact GLAD at (323) 478-8000 (TELEPHONE or TTY), (323) 550-4226 (TTY) or (323) 892-2225 (VIDEOPHONE).
