WESTWOOD—The city of Los Angeles, in partnership with the United Services Automobile Association, and Cambridge Mobile Telematics has launched a safe driving contest that will be held for participating drivers in the city of Westwood and throughout the Los Angeles area. The city’s safest driver can earn thousands in cash prizes.

LA’s Safest Driver Contest will run from June 3 to July 26 and is open to drivers who are at least 18 years of age and currently reside or frequently travel throughout the Los Angeles area.

“If we are going to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious accidents on our streets, we need to put an end to the epidemic of distracted driving. Safe driving is a reward unto itself, but some friendly competition is a great way to drive home the importance of keeping our minds and eyes on the road,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in a written statement.

To participate, contestants must download the LA’s Safest Driver app on their smartphone. The app runs automatically and is activated by movement. Using mobile telematics, the app will track five key measures including: speed, acceleration, braking, cornering, and distraction. The app measures each trip separately for a combined score of 100 possible points. During the contest, drivers will have the opportunity to win prizes for their demonstrated safe driving abilities.

The prize for Safest Overall Driver is $20,000, prize for Safest Military/Veteran Driver is $10,000, the Safest Commercial Driver’s prize is $10,000, and Safest Youth Driver and the Least Distracted Driver can earn $7,500 each.

LA’s Safest Driver Contest is sponsored by USAA, who recently sponsored their hometown of San Antonio’s Safest Driver Contest. San Antonio’s contest resulted in significant reductions in unsafe driving practices. The city saw a 15 percent reduction in distracted driving and a 46 percent reduction in speeding.

Established in 2012, Cambridge Mobile Telematics’ mission is to make the world’s roads safer. The company’s DriveWell platform measures driving quality, incentivizes safer driving, and provides crash and claims services for insurers. CMT’s DriveWell platform has been used by top insurers cellular carriers, commercial fleets, and many other organizations around the world which has resulted in improved safety for millions of users.
