HOLLYWOOD—It might have been the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but that did not stop audiences from flocking to the multiplex. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I” was victorious for the second week in a row taking in more than $56 million over the holiday weekend. In just two weeks, the movie has already crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box-office.
Grabbing the #2 spot was the animated flick “Penguins of Madagascar” with just under $26 million for the three-day weekend. Since its release last weekend, the film has earned over $36 million. Falling to the #3 spot was the flick “Big Hero 6” with just under $19 million. The surprise hit is proving to have strong legs at the box-office dropping slightly from week to week.
Still proving to have some resonance with audiences is the Christopher Nolan intergalactic piece “Interstellar” which added another $15.8 million to its total. Rounding out the top five was the sequel “Horrible Bosses 2” with $15.7 million. Since its release on Wednesday the comedy has earned about $23 million. Not as big a debut as its 2011 predecessor.
After nearly 2 months in the top five, “Gone Girl” finally lost its grip at the box-office thanks to new releases at the multiplex.
