WASHINGTON DC—On Monday, January 7, Ryan English, 24, of Massachusetts was arrested after entering the U.S. Capitol with knives and two Molotov cocktails. English admitted that his initial intent was to kill, Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent (R-SC), Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-LA), and Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.
Reports indicate that United States Capitol Police (USCP) officers with the assistance of the
USCP Canine Unit tracked English’s vehicle to the 900th block of Independence
Avenue SW.
The two Molotov cocktails that English personally carried were made with 50-millimeter (mini) Absolut vodka bottles.
Officers discovered more ingredients to make additional Molotov cocktails in the suspect’s vehicle. English was charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm, and carrying a firearm, dangerous weapon, explosive, or incendiary device on Capitol grounds.
The following information came directly from a USPC press release.
In a separate incident, on Tuesday, January 21, the USCP received a notification to be on the outlook for a male on Capitol grounds who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis.
At 1:15 p.m., USCP officers located a suspicious vehicle located on First Street closest to East Capitol St.NE. Evidence confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Faber, who had recently left the Capitol Visitor Center after taking a tour of the Capitol and the Library of Congress.
The suspect was identified as James A. Faber, 27, of Massachusetts. Capitol Police discovered a 9mm handgun hidden in the waistband of his pants.
Faber was arrested for, resisting arrest, Unlawful Activities, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, and possession of ammunition.
According to Capitol Police, the suspect went through the security checkpoint. He was patted down by hand after the magnetometer sounded.
Officers who failed to identify the security risk, and allowed the perpetrator on Capitol grounds, have been suspended and ordered to take a refresher course in security tactics before returning for duty. A spokesperson for the USCP made the following statement.
“Thankfully nobody was hurt. The USCP demands the highest standards when it comes to screening visitors, so a full review of this incident has already been ordered, as well as mandatory refresher training on security screening, so this never happens again.”
Reports indicate that there were no reported injuries. Mr. Faber’s guns were seized after surveillance footage confirmed his erratic behavior. This case is currently under investigation.
