UNITED STATES—I took on a massive task this past week, I cleaned out my closet. I know it is a task that many Americans have to deal with every so often. I would say you have to do it at least two times a year. I unfortunately only do it maybe once a year. Why? When I look in that closet it just makes me sick to my stomach at times. My headache comes just from looking at it.
As a result, I put it off and put it off, until it reaches a point where I cannot put anything else in the closet or I cannot close it properly. In essence, I am forced to close it. So instead of constantly ignoring it I hunkered down and tackled the task. First thing, you cannot organize or clean your closet WITHOUT TAKING EVERYTHING OUT OF THE CLOSET!
I know this sounds crazy, but it has to be done. You have to completely evaluate what you have, what you can wear, what you cannot wear, what is junk and what can be donated. It sounds like a lot, but you have to evaluate things. We tend to buy and buy to the point that we have clothes because that’s the purpose of the closet that never gets worn. It is just sitting there.
That is a problem America. If you haven’t worn those items in almost a year, you are probably not wearing them. So, you have a choice, you could donate if its lightly worn or sell it. I have sold clothing, especially things that have NEVER been worn or barely worn and is like in new condition. Why not make a few bucks in the process and use that for a later time frame.
Then you have clothing that perhaps doesn’t fix anymore. If it doesn’t fit, you have to get rid of it people. No point on holding onto things that are just collecting dust. If it’s not torn or doesn’t have holes in it, someone who doesn’t have much clothing can likely use it.
The last element is clothing that may be in that closet that is damaged. If that is the case, guess what, you gotta toss it. This allows you to eliminate some clutter in your closet so that you have more space for other things or to store items in a safe place. There is that other element of the closet that becomes a storage place for junk. Guess what, if its junk that is not being used, you need to toss it. Get rid of things that are simply taking up place and serves absolutely no purpose at all.
Once you have your closet organized by getting rid of a few things, you can now perhaps purchase new clothing to place in there. Yeah, I think as Americans we live under this assumption that once we get rid of something we have to replace it, when in all truth that is not always the case. Sometimes just let your closet breathe. You don’t have to have endless stuff just for you to say you have that stuff, if it’s not being used than it’s a waste America.
