LOS ANGELES— Athletic Forward Jonathan Kuminga signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves after rumors of the Portlan Trailblazers and Los Angeles Lakers showing interest. He signed a 2-year, $12.4 million contract with the Timberwolves. Kuminga has been one of the most talked about free agents all summer. Conversations surrounded Kuminga being tied with the Lakers and him being their final piece of free agency.
He’s a skilled scorer with uber athleticism and potentially can be an impactful defender, which is something the Lakers need. The Lakers reportedly were prepared to offer him $12 million annually over 3-years.
This would’ve ended in a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks. The Timberwolves came into the picture after they made the Julius Randle and LaMelo Ball trade. In doing so, they gained a talented guard and losing a forward made them want to make additional changes.
Jonathan Kuminga will most likely be their starting power forward in October. Minnesota will be competing for a championship with the addition.
The offense will be fast paced with Kuminga, Anthony Edwards, and LaMelo Ball sharing the court with each other. The Lakers missed out on the young player but will continue focus on the upcoming season.
