HOLLYWOOD—I predicted that audiences would turn out in droves for the new action-thriller “Lucy” starring Scarlett Johansson and I was right. The sci-fi mind thriller took in a massive $44 million over the weekend to claim the No. 1 spot at the box-office. That is a strong debut for a film with an R-rating. It will be interesting to see how much of a dip the movie takes next week when “Guardians of the Galaxy” hits theaters.

Grabbing the No. 2 spot was the mythical legend “Hercules” starring ‘The Rock.’ I didn’t have big predictions for the film, but it managed to bring in around $29 million in its first weekend; a larger debut than what many expected for the picture. Falling to the No. 3 spot was last week’s box-office champ “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” with $16.4 million. After three weeks in theaters, the sequel has earned over $170 million at the domestic box-office.

Last week’s thriller, “The Purge: Anarchy” dropped nearly 70 percent at theaters taking in only $9.9 million. That’s still a strong number for the film that has already crossed the $50 million mark at the box-office in just two weeks. Rounding out the top five is the animated film “Planes: Fire and Rescue” with $9.3 million to its tally.
