UNITED STATES—I don’t understand how as Americans we are not constantly working to improve ourselves. It feels like an ongoing cycle where we do more harm than good in the world. Why can I say that? Just watch the news? Open social media and you’ll discover how nasty, rude and wicked some people can be. I’ve come to grips that you simply cannot trust what you see on social media.
This isn’t just because of AI, its because everyone is looking for click bait and that opportunity to garner ‘fame.’ Some of the things you’re witnessing, you’re hoping its legit, but the reality is its not. Some of the stuff that people do, you just immediately question, there is no way that you would respond or not respond to a certain situation.
My biggest gripe is how people behave in public. If you’ve been on an airplane recently you know precisely what I’m talking about. People leading back excessively or reclining their chair, putting their feet on people, talking loudly, refusing to shut up, or a lack of public decency. I’m so sick of this freedom of speech talk.
Yes, you have the freedom of speech, but that doesn’t give you the right to be an a**hole in the process. Which some people seem to think and they’re ok with it. Take a look in the mirror and actually see what it is you’re doing and how others might perceive you in the process as well. Some people don’t care how people perceive them, but perhaps they actually should care.
Do you truly want to go viral and have the entire world talking about you for all the wrong reasons? I would not want that and once you go viral on the internet, you are viral which means that meme or gif of you will be utilized for years, decades to come. I’m pushing for Americans to act with more civility because too many of us are self-centered. We truly don’t take a moment to reflect on what is happening in the world instead of just what is happening in our small bubble.
I’ve talked about the importance of gratitude, but even I have to catch myself at times and realize, life is not that bad. I have my health (as long as I continue to take care of it), I have both arms, both legs, I can hear, I can smell, touch, I can see. There are people out there, who can’t hear, who are blind, who are missing an arm, a leg, both arms, both legs, are disable, can’t move, can’t feed themselves, the list goes on and on and on.
Your life is not as bad as you may think it is. So take a moment, take a deep breathe, reflect, realize that and do better to be better to others. Kindness doesn’t cost anything America. Its free, remember that.
