WEST HOLLYWOOD—On January 22, the city of West Hollywood announced that it has started painting existing bike lanes throughout the city in green, marking a major step forward in implementing the West Hollywood City Council’s direction to improve cyclist safety and roadway visibility. During a regular meeting on April 7, 2025, the City Council unanimously approved a policy to install green-colored pavement on all Class II bike lanes in West Hollywood and authorized City staff to begin painting city bike lanes in green.
West Hollywood’s contractor began preliminary layout work on Monday, January 12, 2026, and work is now in progress. To avoid impacts on rush-hour and daytime traffic, all planned work is taking place during nighttime hours. Pending mild weather conditions, work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, February 20, 2026; work may be extended by one week if there are unforeseen conditions.
Existing bike lanes in West Hollywood to be painted green are located:
-On both sides of Santa Monica Boulevard between N. Almont Drive and N. Kings Road/N. Flores Street;
-On the south side of Santa Monica Boulevard between N. Doheny Drive and N. Almont Drive;
-On both sides of N. Fairfax Avenue between the City’s northern municipal boundary (between Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue) to Willoughby Avenue; and
-N. San Vicente Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Beverly Boulevard.
Green-painted bike lanes are aimed to provide a clear visual distinction between areas designated for bicycle travel and general traffic, helping to enhance safety for cyclists and increase awareness among motorists. Green pavement markings have been adopted by communities across the nation and are backed by studies showing that color-enhanced bike lanes can improve cyclist positioning and alert drivers to bicyclist presence.
In developing the project, West Hollywood worked closely with film industry stakeholders to identify a shade of green that enhances bicycle safety while remaining compatible with on-location filming needs.
The city is developing and implementing its WeHo Target Vision Zero Action Plan and Metro K Line North First/Last Mile Plan, which will include recommendations to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and access.
