Bakersfield, CA – On the evening of Saturday, January 18, 2026, a single-vehicle crash resulted in a fatality after a man drove into a canal, according to KGET.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:55 PM near Herring Road, west of Highway 99.
According to authorities, the man was driving a Toyota westbound when dense fog limited visibility, causing him to cross into the eastbound lane. He then traveled onto a dirt shoulder and ultimately overturned into a water-filled canal while moving southwest.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. Investigators are working to determine whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
