San Benito County, CA—On the evening of Tuesday, January 28, 2025, a single-vehicle crash left at least one person dead and others injured, according to KSBW with additional reporting from CHPFatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:06 p.m. on San Justo Road just before Prescott Road.

Authorities said three people were inside the vehicle when it crashed. One person was ejected, and another remained trapped inside the wreckage. The driver suffered a head injury. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and performed CPR on one of the victims.

One westbound lane was blocked as firefighters and paramedics worked to assist the victims. A helicopter was requested for medical transport, and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not determined if speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the accident.

Single-Vehicle Collisions and Passenger Liability

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Personal Injury claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming.

A skilled personal injury attorney can help families pursue proper compensation for their loss by handling these legal complexities and negotiating with insurance companies, who always try to reduce payouts on claims they cannot deny.
