SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion on Tuesday, June 10 at approximately 11:48 a.m. at 1725 Ocean Avenue. According to a press release from SMFD Fire Chief, Scott Ferguson, dispatch arrived within three minutes and found two contractors who were suffering burns from an electrical explosion in the basement of the occupancy.

One male patient was transported to UCLA Westwood facing critical burns over 40 percent of his body. The second male patient was taken to Santa Monica Hospitalfacing moderate burns. Firefighters provided treatment to the injured victims, while they surveyed the area, ventilated the structure and secured the region to prevent entry until Southern California Edison crews arrived.

The cause of the explosion and injuries are still under investigation by members of SCE, as well as California OSHA.
