In 2016, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced his plan to designate 100 fully electric vehicles to be used by the LAPD, while other fully eclectic vehicles will be designated for the city’s Fire, General Services, and Water and Power departments.

The LAPD purchased 23 electric scooters and 3 electric motorcycles for patrol in 2016. The LAPD stated that the Tesla Model S would be used for “testing and research by The LAPD’s technical experts to determine how this technology can support the departments  future needs.”
