HOLLYWOOD HILLS—The Los Angeles Police Department Hollywood Division volunteered to test a Tesla police cruiser on Wednesday, December 11. The Tesla Model S was revealed in a tweet by Captain Steve Lurie @LAPDLurie stating,”As @LAPDHQ moves to be more environmentally conscious, we at @LAPDHollywood happy to volunteer to try out a @Tesla patrol vehicle!”
Captain Steve Lurie also tweeted, “Stop and say hi if you see us on all all electric” patrol for the next few months.”
In 2016, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced his plan to designate 100 fully electric vehicles to be used by the LAPD, while other fully eclectic vehicles will be designated for the city’s Fire, General Services, and Water and Power departments.
The LAPD purchased 23 electric scooters and 3 electric motorcycles for patrol in 2016. The LAPD stated that the Tesla Model S would be used for “testing and research by The LAPD’s technical experts to determine how this technology can support the departments future needs.”
