MALIBU—A 26 year-old man who drove off the road and into a canyon off Mulholland Highway managed to survive the crash on Thursday, January 16.

Emeka Nwokolo was driving in the heavy rain Thursday evening when he heard a loud noise and lost control of his vehicle. The car rolled several feet into the steep canyons and landed on its roof. Nwokolo later discovered that a rock flew into his car as he was driving.

He was trapped inside his vehicle in the rain for more than an hour. Nwokolo managed to escape by kicking the rear door open. He used a pair of scissors as a tool to dig himself out of the wreckage. He made his way up the canyon using the scissors, as a tool to maneuver himself through the mud and dirt.

After reaching the top, he flagged down a driver for help who contacted emergency services. Officials discovered that Nwokolo did not need any medical attention, suffering only scratches on his knuckles. He returned to the scene of the crash several days later with a friend to retrieve his cell phone and other belongings.

“It’s a second chance. God just gave me a second chance to do something,” he told CBSLA.
